Twig and Cone Race

Equipment: 2 straight sticks (or garden canes) per team,  Pine Cones (at least 2 per player), bucket or box (2 per team)

Space: Large playing area or outside

Set up: Split the group into equal teams and line each team up behind an empty bucket. On the opposite side of the playing area place a bucket full of pine cones (same number for each team). Give the first person in each team two sticks.

How to Play: One member from each team runs to their filled bucket and picks up a pine cone using only the twigs as “giant chopsticks” to help. They then take the pine cone to their empty bucket and drop it in. They give the sticks to the next player who then goes. This continues until the team has collected all of their pine cones. The team to finish first is the winner.

Variations: Paint different colours onto the bottom of the pine cones. These colours each correspond to a different amount of points. (eg red 2, green 3).  Place all the pine cones into a bucket in the centre of the space and separate the teams equal distance from the central bucket. Place an empty bucket by each team. On the word “Go” the teams must send one person to collect a pine cone, using only their twigs, from the centre and bring it back with each team member taking a turn until all the pine cones are gone. The team with the most points is the winner.
